How Many Golf Clubs Does a Beginner Need?

You are allowed to carry up to 14 clubs on the golf course, but a beginner does not need 14 clubs to get started. In fact, having fewer well chosen clubs can make learning easier because there are fewer decisions to make during a round.

A driver or fairway wood for longer shots, a hybrid, several irons, a wedge and a putter will cover the majority of situations a new golfer will encounter. More complete package sets add extra clubs to give you greater choice as your game improves, but there is no need to fill every available space in the bag from day one.

Choosing the Right Golf Club Set

Stand Bag or Cart Bag?

It is worth checking which type of golf bag comes with the package set. A stand bag has fold out legs and is designed to be carried, making it a good choice for golfers who expect to walk the course or regularly practise at the driving range.

A cart bag is designed primarily for use on a golf trolley and usually offers more storage space. If you already know that the golfer will use a trolley for most rounds, a package set supplied with a cart bag may be the more practical option.

Do You Need an Expensive Package Set?

Not necessarily. If you are completely new to golf, a good value starter set can provide everything you need while you learn the game and discover which types of clubs suit you. Spending more can give you higher specification components, different shaft options and clubs that may remain suitable for longer as your golf improves, but there is little benefit in paying for features you do not yet need.

If you expect to play regularly, choosing a package set from an established golf brand can make sense because it can give you a strong starting point before gradually upgrading individual clubs later.
